When it was revealed that Red Dead Redemption 2 would be entirely playable in first-person it came as no surprise. GTAV made it possible when it made its way over to the latest generation of consoles so seeing that Rockstar’s next big open world game would be available in first-person made sense. While GTAV’s first-person wasn’t the best, even at times feeling like actions were happening for third-person while in first-person, it still created a sense of grounding that can always be appreciated in video games. If not thinking about playing Red Dead Redemption 2 in first-person; here’s a challenge — just give it a shot.

Like Cézanne's brushstrokes, each small detail of your performance should contribute to a larger image. It's not about what you say when you call out; it's about how you say it. Is your voice hoarse? Are you making it too hoarse? Don't make it Newport 100s hoarse, make it sore throat hoarse. What about a cough? Be warned--lots of first-timers overdo the cough. Don't pepper your sentences with coughs, rather, add one during any point of silence for dramatic effect. A little cough can go a long way. Make your performance as nuanced and discrete as possible.
Whether wanting to play in third-person as RDR2 is presented or taking the plunge and playing entirely in first-person, Red Dead Redemption 2 is sure to be fun. It just might be more fun playing entirely through the eyes of Arthur. Obviously, one is not better than the other, but having the opportunity to experience the West with ones’ own eyes on the ground level of it all, with the amount of detail Rockstar has put in is sure to be a wildly different experience. Playing in first-person means experiencing the world as it is happening because it's happening with only what can be seen wherever one may be looking. It’s easy to imagine the multiple scenarios that might be brought to life even more just from playing RDR2 in first-person. Horseback shootouts can have more feeling. Bar brawls will feel that true punch. Being chased down by whatever local law enforcement comprised of sheriff and deputy could feel palpably tense. While Rockstar has yet to show how first-person will function, hopefully they’ve taken some lessons out of their own book with GTAV. First-person has come a ways in games with titles such as Dishonored, Prey, Call of Duty and the like. While first-person might not be the main focus, Rockstar has an opportunity to appease players that will want to see through the eyes of Arthur Morgan.

It may be clear from Red Dead Redemption 2 's title, but some may play Arthur Morgan's story first because it is a prequel. While the newer title does lead up to the events of Red Dead Redemption , it is ultimately better to play the 2010 game first. Playing RDR2 in first-person could mean a world of difference for the very world. As mentioned, the west of Red Dead Redemption 2 is massive and seeing some of the vistas that litter every corner of this game are sure to be breathtaking. It’s that feeling of going on a good hike only to come up over whatever ridge and be swept away by what lays just over that horizon line. The world of RDR2 looks to be vastly versatile with mountains, plains, swamps and deserts. Traveling through the world of RDR2 in first-person is sure to be even more breathtaking than having to watch the butt-end of a horse as it poops. Not that there is anything wrong with the level of detail Rockstar is going for, but at least you won’t have to watch your horse do the business. Kidding aside, again, like GTAV when brought to first-person there was something much more tangible present in making ones’ way through the world. Being on the ground level of it all while interacting with all of it feels quite different than traveling through that same world in third-person.
